We will continue our tour via Marquês de Pombal and Estrela in direction to the river. Driving alongside the river Tagus, we will follow to Belém area and see, Torre de Belém (sightseeing) and in the second stop see Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Padrão dos Descobrimentos.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos was first erected in 1940, in a temporary form, as part of the Portuguese World Exhibition, built with perishable materials. The monument was reconstructed in 1960 to mark 500 years since the death of the Infante Dom Henrique (Henry the Navigator). A stylised caravel seems to be setting out to sea, with Henry the Navigator in its prow. On the two lateral ramps ascending to the symbolic figure of the Prince are some of the significant characters of the Portuguese overseas expansion and cultural names from the age of the Discoveries, 32 in total, all portrayed with symbols that allude to their identity: navigators, cartographers, warriors, colonisers, missionaries, chroniclers and artists. The South African government gifted the construction of the square in front of the monument: the 50-metre-diameter (160 ft) Rosa-dos-Ventos (compass rose) that includes a Mappa mundi, showing the routes of Portuguese carracks and caravels during the Age of Discovery.

The Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) is a National Monument and was also classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. King Manuel I built a large monastery near the location where the Infante D. Henrique ordered a church to be built in the mid-15th century by invocation of St. Mary of Belém. To immortalise the memory of the Infante, for his intense devotion to Our Lady and faith in St. Jerome, in 1496 King Manuel I decided to found the Monastery of St. Mary of Belém, near the city of Lisbon, next to the Tagus River. Donated to the monks of the Order of St. Jerome, today it is commonly known as the Jerónimos Monastery. A pantheon of the Avis-Beja Dynasty, in the 19th century the church became the sepulchre for heroes and poets: Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões. A notable work of architecture, it became part of Portuguese identity and culture.

At this point of the social event you will have the opportunity to taste “Pastel de Bélem” considered as the best Pastrie in the world, according to Taste Atlas – Best Rated Pastries in the World.

After, we will continue all across the river and the ocean to Cascais, our third stop, a charming and traditionally a fishing village, that is situated on the western edge of the Tagus estuary, right in front of the Atlantic ocean and next to the Sintra mountains.

Cascais’s history as a popular seaside resort originated in the 1870, when King Luís I converted the Fortaleza da Cidadela into the summer residence of the Portuguese monarchy of Portugal. The king’s example was immediately copied by the nobility, who built palaces and extremely beautiful villas in the town, where they spent the hottest season of the year, completely transforming the appearance of the former fishing village. Nowadays Cascais is a cosmopolitan and very lively town that still preserves a great deal of its earlier aristocratic atmosphere. Here you will be able to check Cascais downtown and its lovely beach and bay.

After the tour, we will return to Lisbon and go to the restaurant and enjoy the best of Portuguese gastronomy animated with traditional music. An unforgettable evening full of new experiences!
