M.Ed Ph.D,\u00a0Professor of Technology Enhanced Assessment and Learning,\u00a0Institute of Educational Technology,\u00a0The Open University, UK<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The PowerPoint presentation is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/end-educationconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Keynote-Presentation_END-conference-2019.pptx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Abstract<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Digital assessment is an evolving construct used in education to enrich, inform and complement the teaching process.\u00a0 Using automatic feedback however has been under-utilised and under-valued throughout the assessment process.\u00a0This presentation will take you through a number of projects which have automated some aspects of assessment.<br \/>\nThose selected from my own research have a strong conceptual underpinning, for instance <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=ckoKDQAAQBAJ&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PT8&amp;dq=dweck+mindset&amp;ots=at3RyuC96N&amp;sig=3P6WndnGDZMDe-ht3OJmGcXkL34#v=onepage&amp;q=dweck%20mindset&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dweck&#8217;s work<\/a>\u00a0to develop\u00a0Open Comment which provided feedback to Arts students.\u00a0 With Open Mentor, I used\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/Bales-1970-Interaction-Process-Analysis-Categories_tbl1_43507221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bale&#8217;s work\u00a0<\/a>on interactive categories to help tutors develop effective and supportive feedback.\u00a0 SafeSea, on the other hand, allows students to trial essay writing before taking the sometimes daunting step of submitting their first essay, using analysis based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conversation_theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pask&#8217;s conversational framework<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis presentation will discuss the issues raised by teachers and students in this arena.\u00a0 It will provide examples of how their concerns are currently being addressed by both researchers and software developers in order to support educator feedback to students. Finally, the issue of potential disruptors will be raised which moves us into the realm of crystal ball gazing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Biography<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Professor Denise Whitelock has over twenty years experience in designing, researching and evaluating online and computer-based learning in Higher Education.\u00a0She is a Professor of Technology Enhanced Assessment and Learning in the Open University\u2019s Institute of Educational Technology. She is currently leading the UK\u2019s contribution to the Adaptive Trust e-Assessment System for Learning (TeSLA) <a href=\"http:\/\/tesla-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/tesla-project.eu\/<\/a>project. She has just completed directing the CODUR\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/in3.uoc.edu\/opencms_in3\/opencms\/webs\/projectes\/codur\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/in3.uoc.edu\/opencms_in3\/opencms\/webs\/projectes\/codur\/en\/index.html<\/a> and SAFeSEA\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/researchprojects\/safesea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/researchprojects\/safesea\/<\/a> projects. \u00a0The aim of this latter research was to provide an effective automated interactive feedback system that yields an acceptable level of support for university students writing essays in a distance or e-learning context.
